Peanut is back!

So it's not exactly the same as it was before and I've got some work to do (clean up smilies, update the logo (who really wants to see phpBB every dang day?!) but it's working now ... in total thanks to StoneGlow! You may see her name around here from time to time and she's listed as an Admin to be able to keep up with security updates & such.

The low-down here is:

- I had many databases on the web host under my account
- most of them had discussion boards loaded to them
- few were actually used (Peanut & BPDR, really)
- BPDR was recently (last 3 mos, I think) hacked
- Peanut was hacked last week
- there are hack-bots scouring the internet looking for weaknesses (through out-of-date software) to exploit
- the "chain is only as strong as its weakest link" applied
- when BPDR was hacked, the sofware got updated but nothing else
- when Peanut got hacked, the webhost made it clear that because so many databases had out-of-date software, all of the databases & boards were vulnerable
- in order to strengthen security a bit, we had to change passwords (which caused things to stop working)

StoneGlow actually had a test version of Peanut going for a bit of time to test everything to make sure things would work okay for us.

So yeah, welcome back to Peanut! Things are a bit different but we'll acclimate, cuz we're resilient little nuts. Heh.

Not that a glowing stone makes much more logical sense than does a pile of glowing snow, I still chuckled.

I posted somewhere that the smilies are now on pages which is cool - you don't have to wait for the whole flippin' set to show up.

I might be turning off the "upload attachment" feature. I don't want spammers to upload malicious stuff, after all.

Productivity while procrastinating is an art form, I tell you.

I've made pretty much everyone a Mod to the semi-public forums (General, Critters, Kitchen, etc.) just cuz. There ARE moderator logs so we can track what ya'll are doing.

I've turned off the ability to upload attachments to posts or PMs.

I've turned on the Thumbnail option so if an image is inserted into a post, the board may resize it down for viewing/clicking purposes (no more than 400 pixels in any direction) which one would assume would allow readers to click on the thumbnail to open the full-size image in a new window. Dunno - will have to see how that goes. I've also set the system to allow images so that they are no larger than 500x500 (to prevent breaking / scrolling) so hopefully the thumbnail thing will kick in for larger images.

You can have 4 PM folders. Each PM folder can hold up to 50 PMs per box. Use them wisely, grasshopper.

If you max out your PMs, new messages will be held back til you clear stuff out. (If this won't work for yiz, lemme know and we can change it to delete the oldest messages automatically to make room for the new stuff trying to come in.)

You can edit any PM you've sent up until the time the other person opens it. Then you're done.

Scary stuff here ... you can have a Print View of PMs - which comes in handy for those blackmail situations that arise so frequently.

You can also forward PMs to other people now.

We have the ability to censor words. I have censored a word. Have fun figuring out which one it is!

You can Report a post. If a user ends up with a Mod/Admin "Warning" as a result, that sticks around for 90 days. You can also report a PM if you're so inclined. Behave yerselves!

You can't change your username at-will but you can ask an Admin to do it for you if you really want.

I've turned the avatars back on. (Now where the heck is Edna, dadgumit??)

You currently have a 15 min window to edit a post you've made. After that, tough noogies. And if you edit, it will show that you edited. We're all watching everything you do!

If you add a poll to a thread, you can have 15 options in the poll.

You can only type 60,000 characters per post. Try to be concise. Heh.

Your signatures can be up to 2,500 characters with a maximum of 5 links.

You can update your profile (User Control Panel, upper left corner) to include your birthday (month & day is sufficient).

You can add people to the Foe list and then the only time you see their posts is in the display of previous replies when you're typing a reply in a thread. (This is the Friends & Foes tab in the User Control Panel, upper left corner.)

I didn't want to go too crazy with the word censoring. I did set one up to replace "the" with "the" cuz that one drives me buggy.

Funny story ... over at the Nutbar board, when we first figured out that you could do the Word Censoring thing, the tech person then was this guy who I dated for a short time and a few years later, he met my other friend through the board & started dating her (they're now married with a 6 yo girl.) Well both my girlfriend & I are Scorpios, as was his ex-girlfriend before me. Apparently the ex and I put him through a bit of an emotional wringer so he used to joke that Scorpios were the Black Plague of Death. Then he my my friend (the now-wife) but she chuckled along with the sense of humor. So anyway, back to the Word Censoring ... I ran amok and started setting up all kinds of find/replace things. TEH with THE and SUPPOSIBLY with SUPPOSEDLY and POSSABLY with POSSIBLY, you get the idea. And he went in and set one up to swap out SCORPIO with BLACK PLAGUE OF DEATH. Turns out that one of the nutters there had Multiple Personality Disorder and also happened to be a Scorpio. She mentioned the word "Scorpio" in a post and then saw that it said "Black Plague of Death" the next day (when she went back to read replies) and FLIPPED OUT! She didn't remember typing "Black Plague of Death" and thought she had "lost time" again and that one of the other personalities was trying to make her look bad & all kinds of crazy crap. We took down that particular word censor right away.

So yeah ... we COULD have a lot of fun with the word censors - just to drive people buggy (all in good fun, of course) but for now, I'm good with the/the.

wow, yeah i can see where a person who has a history of other personalities doing things "behind her back" would really be upset. i remember the first time i encountered word swaps at implodedstar, not knowing at first that could be done and thinking that's what people had really typed and thinking "what are these people talking about??"

and yeah, i get the "the" one. i don't remember if i've used that on here but i do have a tendency to speak in lolcat - usually out loud talking to my cats but it does sometimes spill over into other areas. fortunately anyone i'd do that around knows about lolcats so they'd know what's going on.
