oh gosh that's so adorable.

i'm thinking of getting a cat, but my windows are always open since it's so hot in my apartment and I'm worried it'd get onto the fire escape. Any thoughts?

hmm. my neighbors actually installed some kind of a metal grate in front of the window in the kids' room to keep the 2-year-old from getting to the screen and pushing it out (as their next-door neighbor's kid did in his room, also on the second floor, fortunately only the screen fell not the child). but i don't know if it's not your own home to make that kind of modifications to. my suggestion would be to ask another cat owner that lives near you, or someone at a pet store or hardware store - there must be lots of people that have to deal with the same thing, someone must have figured it out. i usually don't open windows very far, just because i'm on the first floor and it doesn't get that hot, and if it does i run the air conditioning.
